Workplace wellbeing celebrated at Move More awards event

26th July 2019

Sheffield health experts have urged people across the city to continue to -work together to transform Sheffield into the UK's most active city, at an event which celebrated the city's most physically active businesses and individuals.

Millions of active minutes were recorded across the city once more as part of Move More Month, a physical activity initiative which is aiming to transform Sheffield into the UK's most active city. This year, more than 100 businesses from across Sheffield took part in the initiative's Workplace Challenge, a scheme which aims to engineer exercise back into the working environment, while around 40 schools including thousands of pupils, staff and parents engaged with physical activity during the month, which took place in June. Davys Sports Club was the city's most active workplace with an impressive daily average of 190 active minutes. B. Braun Medical Ltd was the most active team (of 10 people) with 176 average daily minutes, with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals the most engaged workforce with a total of 536 people taking part in the challenge. The city's most active GP practice was Falkland House Surgery (131 average minutes) and most active sole trader was Sheffield CCG IPCT (206 average minutes). Meanwhile, Best School a new award for 2019 went to Walkley Primary School. Tom Hughes, Move More project lead at Sheffield City Council, said: -It was great to celebrate the physical activity achievements of workplaces and individuals from across Sheffield, and where better to do it than at B. Braun Medical Ltd, an organisation which works so hard to promote wellbeing. -Move More is all about making physical activity fun and engaging and Move More Month 2019 certainly achieved that right from the word go with the city successfully setting a new hopscotch mass participation Guinness World Record. -We've enjoyed helping people change their lifestyles and improve their lives through physical activity and we look forward to that continuing in the coming months and years as we aim to transform Sheffield into the UK's most active city. Doctor Ollie Hart, GP at Sheffield's Sloan Medical Centre and Move More Executive Board Member, stressed the importance of 'doing things differently' when it comes to physical activity. He said: -We are increasingly aware through research that healthcare contributes to between 10-25% of people's health and wellbeing, but around 60% is made up of things we do individually or as a community together. -Increasingly the importance of a community working together is being recognised, as is the importance of doing things differently. This is why Move More as an initiative is so important. -Move More as an organisation grew out of the Olympic Legacy from 2012, so we're only really seven years old. But it's been a fantastic collaboration of the public and voluntary and private sector in the city, everyone has worked really hard on this together. The event also saw a host of guest speakers explain all about Move More and Sheffield's ambition to become the most active city in the UK and why it is a key economic, community and health priority. Speakers included Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council; Doctor Ollie Hart; Rob Woollen, Head of Health and Wellbeing at Move More sponsor People Plus; and Deborah Cundy, an award-winning lifestyle coach who used physical activity to turn her life around.
