See It Be It in Sheffield

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce have teamed up with Sheffield Council and the Lifelong Learning & Skills Team to inspire the next generation in Sheffield by opening the doors to our local labour market.

Inspiring the next generation

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce have teamed up with Sheffield Council and the Lifelong Learning & Skills Team to inspire the next generation in Sheffield by opening the doors to our local labour market.

See It Be It in Sheffield is a collection of videos or ‘virtual encounters’ with employers that are hosted on YouTube. Each short encounter is created to raise careers awareness and aspiration of the different jobs that are available in Sheffield. Working with the Council’s Enterprise Adviser Network, these resources will be shared across all secondary (mainstream and special) schools and colleges in Sheffield.

The videos each provide a short employer encounter from a local person aged 16-30 who will introduce themselves, outline the journey to their role, explain what they like about their role and what motivates them, give a short summary of the labour market in their sector, and finally set a short task/question for young people to consider. It is intended that these videos will be ‘conversation starters’, posing a question that can be considered by viewers and discussed with their tutors/peer groups/parents.

The campaign is looking for a range of employers to help populate this channel so we can really show a true picture of the diverse range of opportunities in our city.  Viewers need to see it if they are to be it and this is why an important element of the campaign is to capture diversity in our opportunities and our workforce by featuring videos of individuals from diverse backgrounds, who are in non-traditional roles, or who have faced significant barriers or challenges (e.g. learning difficulties, lack of opportunities or experiences or non-mainstream education) - can you help?

Why support?

Our young people need you. It is proven that employer engagement improves the learning journey and experience. Research indicates that 86% of young people are less likely to be unemployed or out of education after 4 or more employer encounters. Young people who benefit from employer engagement are likely to earn 18% more than their peers. Sheffield Chamber is supporting the See It Be It campaign to ensure the young people in our city are not disadvantaged and are inspired to consider careers in Sheffield.
