Overview
This short ILM accredited qualification is an excellent opportunity for current and aspiring senior leaders to develop core strategic management knowledge and skills and transfer them directly into practise in the workplace. The level 5 certificate is an ideal vehicle for departmental heads and practising middle managers to improve departmental performance and prepare for more senior management responsibilities.

This highly interactive programme provides participants with the opportunity to work with others in similar situations to share understanding and best practise and to identify improved working strategies.

Programme Structure

  • Participants will attend 6 sessions over a 6 month period
  • The sessions will run from 9.30 – 4.00 with breaks and small break out groups on

Session 1 – Organisation Strategy & Managers Role
Delivering departmental success in line with the organisational strategy

  • Identifying organisation strategy and corporate objectives
  • Planning departmental direction and setting objectives in line with organisational strategy
  • Communication processes to cascade organisation and departmental direction
  • Defining key managerial skills and behaviours
  • Personal development planning

Session 2 - Leadership Styles

  • The prevailing leadership styles within the organisation
  • Impact of leadership styles of performance
  • Motivating to build commitment
  • Creating the right climate for success

Session 3 - Interpersonal skills, communication and emotional intelligence

  • The effects of interpersonal skills on managerial performance
  • Emotional intelligence strategies to improve leadership ability
  • Identifying barriers to effective departmental communication
  • The impact of personal communication style on others
  • Developing communication strategies to manage a variety of relationships and situations

Session 4 – Managing performance and contribution to deliver departmental strategy

  • Setting performance expectations and objectives in line with departmental direction
  • Mechanisms for monitoring and measuring performance against expectations
  • Performance review processes
  • Embedding behavioural and technical competencies
  • Managing performance issues

Session 5 – The Managers role in leading innovation and change

  • The need for change
  • Conducting a business analysis
  • Identifying potential changes required to deliver departmental strategy in the longer term
  • The psychology of change and it’s impact on productivity
  • Managing people through change processes
  • Implementing continuous improvement

Session 6 – Implementing change and continuous professional development in the leadership role

  • Planning and implementing change to deliver departmental strategy
  • Awareness of self and your impact on the team you lead
  • Assessment of own knowledge, skills and behaviours and their effect on managerial performance
  • Planning individual professional development

Assessment
Candidates will be assessed via the completion of 3 assessment projects on the following
topics.

  • Understanding the management role to improve management performance
  • Assessing your own leadership capability and performance
  • Leading Innovation and change

Your tutor will guide you through each assessment paper. You will be required to work independently, conduct relevant research and demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking and analysis. Your assessments should reflect the real situation in which you lead and manage, demonstrating your ability to apply the learning and create tangible improvements for yourself and the department. The presentation delivered on session 4 will
summarise individual learning from the programme and therefore contribute to the overall assessment process.

Completed assessment papers should be emailed in for marking. You will then receive your overall mark achieved and developmental feedback. Any assessments not meeting the minimum pass mark will be referred to the candidate to be improved in the highlighted areas.

The assessment process will be covered in full during the induction in session 1.

Upon successful completion of both assessments, delegates will achieve a nationally recognised qualification.
